Rapid Landscape Changes in Plastic Bays Along the Norwegian Coastline

چکیده
The Norwegian Coastal Current transports natural debris and plastic waste along the coastline. Deposition occurs in so-called wreck-bays includes floating debris, such as seaweed, driftwood volcanic pumice, increasing amounts of plastics during last decades. these bays is controlled by ocean currents, tidal movements, prevailing winds coastal morphology. We have compared soil profiles, analyzed vegetation inspected aerial photos back to 1950 defined three zones wreck-bays, where accumulation follows distinct physical processes. Zone 1 foreshore deposition consists recent deposits that are frequently reworked high tides wave erosion. Thus, there no 1. 2 situated above tide mark storm embankments. Here, an archive accumulated potentially deposited decades ago. 3 starts transported wind from 2, zone continues onshore until meets obstacles. Plastic seems escalate formation entangled within organic Mapping characterizing layers indicates deep soils been formed 50 or more years’ accumulation, while pre-plastic thin. forms dams rivers wetlands, changing shape properties landscape, also altering microhabitat for plants. This case-study describes ongoing landscape change, evidently co-occurring with onset accumulation. Such processes not limited coastline but likely occur wherever materials. If this allowed continue, we may witness a continued escalating change function landscapes ecosystems globally.

Distribution of Fecal Indicator Bacteria along the Malibu, California, Coastline
A USGS scientist collects data from an automated sampling system moored in Malibu Lagoon (July 2009). Photograph by John Izbicki, USGS. Each year, over 550 million people visit California’s public beaches. To protect beach-goers from exposure to waterborne disease, California state law requires water-quality monitoring for fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), such as enterococci and Escherichia coli...
متن کاملHurricane Risk Variability along the Gulf of Mexico Coastline
Hurricane risk characteristics are examined across the U. S. Gulf of Mexico coastline using a hexagonal tessellation. Using an extreme value model, parameters are collected representing the rate or λ (frequency), the scale or σ (range), and the shape or ξ (intensity) of the extreme wind distribution. These latent parameters and the 30-year return level are visualized across the grid. The greate...

A total of 59 categories of litter items were found at 20 beaches (13 mechanically cleaned, 7 non-cleaned) in the Cádiz tourist environment, Spain. Cluster Analysis and Principal Components Analysis were used to highlight similarities and contrasts between sites and/or associations between litter categories. Multivariate analyses separated beaches according to the total numbers of litter items ...

متن کاملMonitoring coastline changes in Amirabad Port by surveying coastline and sea level
The process of erosion and desertification affects social communities, agricultural lands and natural resources in coastal areas. The rapid coastline changes would cause social and economic issues in the coastal areas. In this study, Miankaleh coasts and the eastern coastlines of Amirabad port have been surveyed due to existing benchmarks since June 2013 until December 2015 in order to analyze ...
